What Is a Tooth Extraction?
At Huntsville Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, preserving your natural teeth is always our top goal, but there are situations when removing a problem tooth is the best choice for protecting your overall oral health. Tooth extraction is a common oral surgery we perform when severe decay, gum disease, trauma, crowding, or other complications threaten the form and function of a patient's smile. In some cases, extractions are also performed to prepare for orthodontic treatment or dentures. With decades of experience, Dr. S. Clint Hudson performs both routine and surgical tooth extractions, including wisdom tooth removal, when discomfort, crowding, or an impacted tooth starts to cause problems. Regardless of your reason for needing a tooth removal, our team is committed to providing comprehensive treatment with a focus on your comfort and long-term oral health. Learn more about our approach to tooth extraction by scheduling a consultation and exam at our oral surgery practice in Huntsville, AL today.
How Does a Tooth Extraction Work?
Dr. Hudson performs tooth extractions in-office using local or general anesthesia, based on your medical history and needs. For simple extractions, we'll gently loosen the tooth using specialized instruments before removing it and cleaning the extraction site. If the tooth is impacted, broken, or too big to remove in one piece, Dr. Hudson may perform a surgical extraction, which involves making a small incision in the gums and removing a portion of bone to access and break up the tooth for easier removal.
Before you leave, we'll provide detailed instructions for care after your tooth extraction, including how to manage discomfort, reduce swelling, and promote healing. For the first few days, you'll need to avoid anything that could interfere with healing, such as smoking, using a straw, or brushing directly over the site. A soft diet is recommended while the area is still tender — foods like eggs, pasta, and smoothies are good options. As healing progresses, you'll be able to return to your normal routine with a few simple precautions.
What Are the Benefits of Tooth Extractions?
A problematic tooth can affect more than just your comfort. Whether it's causing pain, infection, or standing in the way of future treatment, removing it may be the right next step. At Huntsville Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, we make the extraction process straightforward and manageable, whether you need a single tooth removed or multiple teeth addressed as part of a larger plan. The benefits of this treatment include:

- Helps prevent damage to nearby teeth and bone

The SWEETEST staff I’ve ever met!! Dr. Hudson is so down to earth and does a great job with explaining everything. He is gentle and very knowledgeable. I am scared of the dentist and he made my wisdom tooth extraction so easy. Thank you Dr. Hudson and your entire staff for being kind and helpful.
If someone can make a paranoid person like me get into the upper wisdom teeth removal procedure and go out feeling it was nothing, then this place is the real deal.Thank you guys, thank you Dr. KellyChrist bless yah
I hardly write reviews for places but I would love to say that if you need your wisdom teeth out and you’re an anxious person, this is the place to go. The doctor was extremely nice and answered all of my questions and even prescribed me medication to take before the procedure so I could feel relaxed when I came in. When I walked into my room today the nurse was very sweet and walked me through the steps as she attached the monitors and iv. If you’re afraid of needles, I promise you the iv insertion did not hurt at all! It was just a very slight pinch. If you’ve never been put under before and you need to get your wisdom teeth removed, this is the place to do it! Thank you guys so much for your kindness!

Am I A Candidate For A Tooth Extraction?
You may be a good candidate for a tooth extraction if you have a tooth that is severely damaged, decayed, or infected beyond repair. Other reasons for an extraction include advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth, significant crowding that prevents proper alignment, or a tooth that has been broken by trauma. Extractions are also sometimes necessary to prepare for orthodontic treatments or to make way for dental prosthetics. If you are experiencing pain, swelling, or have a tooth that is causing problems, scheduling a consultation with Dr. Hudson is the first step to determine if an extraction is the right treatment for your oral health needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the extraction be painful?
During the procedure, local or general anesthesia will help ensure that you won’t feel pain. After the extraction, some discomfort is normal, but it can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and following post-op care instructions. Dr. Hudson focuses on making you as comfortable as possible throughout the entire process.
Can I eat normally after a tooth extraction?
Immediately after the procedure, you’ll need to stick to a soft diet to avoid irritating the extraction site. Foods like eggs, yogurt, and smoothies are great options. Gradually, as healing progresses in Huntsville, AL, you can reintroduce your regular diet with a few precautions.
What are the risks of not removing an impacted or problem tooth?
Leaving a problematic tooth untreated can lead to infection, damage to surrounding teeth, or worsening pain. Impacted teeth can also cause crowding, misalignment, or cysts that damage jawbone structure. Timely removal at Huntsville Oral Surgery & Dental Implants helps prevent these complications and protects your overall oral health.
